ABOUT THIS TRAINING: EEG for Beginners virtual training with Dr. Tiff Thompson, PhD, MFT, QEEG-D, R.EEG T, BCN
This 10-week program is for those who are just beginning to read and interpret EEG data. Each week, participants are introduced to methods and approach to identify EEG signatures, utilize brain-analysis software, and connect this data to pathologies and patient symptoms. Whether one is just starting out, needs a refresher, or needs to deepen their fundamental understanding of EEG and QEEG, this program is for them.
Dates/Topics by Date:
- August 17, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Basics and Fundamentals
This session is the starting point of learning to gather, save, and review EEG recordings. Many different forms of EEG assessment will be used, including Neuroguide, NeuroField, WinEEG, isync, and others.
- August 24, 2026 - 9 am to 10 am PT – Beginning to Read Frequencies and Rhythms
This session will delve into the fundamentals of recording EEGs and how to use the features found within the recording software. Impedance-checking and ensuring your unit is calibrated properly is a very important first step for any recording and can determine how clean your recording turns out. If there is still noise in the recording, they can sometimes be filtered out by turning on or off certain filters.
- September 14, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – From Raw to Quantitative: What Mapping Can Reveal
This session follows right on the heels of the previous ones. Now that you have the recording, learn how to read it by visually determining what each frequency is (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma) and where it is coming from. You'll start to build the skills to visually read raw EEG waveforms and later, determine what each frequency means.
- September 21, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Artifacts
This session will teach you how to turn a raw EEG into a Quantitative EEG. The QEEG is where you can begin to determine pathologies and sources of the symptoms. This is also the stage where you begin interpreting the results and producing reports with headmap images and graphs.
- September 28, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Montages
This session will teach about all types of artifacts. Artifacts are snippets of data that are not true to the brain and are things like muscle tension, eye blinks, sweat, and salt bridges just to name a few. Learn how to identify these artifacts and remove them from your recording. The skill you will learn to develop is how to identify artifacts during the live recording and correct for them in real-time to produce a clean and accurate recording.
- October 5, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Morphology
During this session, Dr. Thompson will dive into montages and how they can aid in your analysis of the data. Montages allow you to confirm if a waveform / transient is true or if it is an artifact. Learn how this feature can be an important aid to your practice in determining a treatment plan for your patient.
- October 26, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Phenotypes and Normal Adult EEG
This course will discuss the morphology of waveforms. You'll gain an eye for picking out these waveforms in the raw data and creating an idea of what these will look like when plotted on a headmap. This skill will only further your expertise in reading and interpreting the data.
- November 16, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Vigilance and Sleep
This session will uniquely discuss the connection between phenotypes and EEG profiles. Jay Gunkelman was the first to make this connection and has inspired other clinicians to look at how this connection can impact treatment success.
- November 23, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Normal Pediatric EEGs
This session will dive into looking at normal pediatric EEGs. Babies produce a specifically different set of waveforms than a fully developed adult. As such, learn about what is normal at certain age markers and how to look out for any abnormalities.
- November 30, 2026 – 9 am to 10 am PT – Abnormalities: Epileptiform Content and Seizure Profiles
Previous sessions have led to the ability to now detect abnormalities. This final session in EEG for Beginners utilizes that accumulative knowledge. Now that you know what normal clean data is, you can begin to pick out what is abnormal in the EEG and how this can identify certain pathologies or symptoms. Specifically, learn how to detect epileptiform content and when to refer your patient out to a neurologist.

Level:
INTRODUCTORY: Content is designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. Through this level of programming, the learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. An introductory level program also may serve as the foundation for subsequent intermediate and advanced learning. Introductory level programming may also be related to an emerging area of knowledge or practice. Although this content can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, an introductory level program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the basics of EEG and QEEG
2. Describe gain, calibration, filters, impedance, and the fundamentals of recording.
3. Recognize and begin to read frequencies and rhythms
4. Describe mapping analysis and what mapping can reveal
5. Recognize Artifacts in EEG
6. Recognize Montages in EEG
7. Recognize Morphology in EEG
8. Recognize Phenotypes and Normal Adult EEG
9. Recognize Normal Pediatric EEG
10. Recognize Abnormal Epileptiform content and seizure profiles

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) STATEMENT: ADA accommodations will be made in accordance with the law. If you require ADA accommodation, please indicate what your needs are at the time of registration. We cannot ensure the availability of appropriate accommodations without prior notification.
GRIEVANCE POLICY: The Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. AAPB will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Education Chair in consultation with the members of the continuing education committee, the AAPB Ethics Chairperson, Continuing Education (CE) Committee Chairperson, Program Planning Committee Chairperson, and/or the Conference Chairperson. While AAPB goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the convention staff which require intervention and/or action on the part of the convention staff or an officer of AAPB. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances. 1. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. If the person toward whom the grievance is directed is also the instructor or a chair of any of the above-mentioned committees, the AAPB Board of Directors will appoint a Board representative to oversee the resolution of any of the participant complaints, in an effort to avoid any and all conflicts of interest. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Chair will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual. 2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the convention chair will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the convention chair will: a) attempt to move the participant to another workshop or b) provide a credit for a subsequent year's workshop or c) provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee. Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual. 3. If the grievance concerns an AAPB CE program, in a specific regard, the CE Chair will attempt to arbitrate.
